MRS. WIEGLE'S LATIN PAGE

SALVE and welcome to my Latin Page.

LATINA EST GAUDIUM ET UTILIS
Latin is fun and useful!

CUR LINGUAM LATINAM STUDEMUS?
Why do we study the Latin Language?

Romani erant populi fabulosi.
The Romans were amazing people.

Linguam et culturam omnino Europam extenderunt.
They spread their language and culture throughout Europe.

Urbes, vias, pontes, aquae ductos ut aqam ducere et cloacas ut detrimentum abducere aedificaverunt.
They built cities, roads, bridges, aqueducts to bring water and sewers to carry away wastes.

Romani aedificias graves struxerunt. Concretum finxerunt!
They built impressive buildings. They invented concrete!

Leges fecerunt et civites populis superatis extenderunt.
They made laws and extended citizenship to the people they conquered.

The Latin language, is not dead; it has turned into Italian, Spanish, Portugese, French, Romanian, Catalan, Occitan, Ladin, and a few other languages, spoken by over 859 million people. In addition, the English language, spoken by over 514 million people, takes over 60% of its words from Latin. If you speak Spanish, over 80% of Spanish words come from Latin.

By studying Latin, you will get a better understanding of English grammar and root words. Your vocabulary will increase, and you will get better scores on your SAT's. Your brain will get sharp from figuring out Latin sentences, and you will learn fascinating facts about the Roman people. College admissions offices look favorably on applicants who have studied Latin, and it will help you in your college studies. Besides, it is fun to impress your friends by saying things in Latin.

Ave et Vale!
