2, ROBERT 1) b.
Abt. 1742, Goshen Twp, Chester Co. Emigrated to Prince Edward Island 1784;
d. December 17, 1821, Bedeque PEI Canada. From "An Island Refuge",
produced to observe the Bicentennial of the
arrival of the Loyalists on the Island. It was published by the Abegweit
Branch of the United Empire Loyalist Association of Canada in 1983.
"Loyalist John Baker was issued a license to marry Hannah Lewis on
December 23, 1773 by the Secretary of State at New York. Most Quaker marriages
were performed in the traditional Meeting house; one might conclude that
John's wife was not a Quaker. Four children were born to the couple before
they decided to leave their strife-torn native land and migrate northward
to Nova Scotia. They received a grant of land in Remsheg, now Wallace, prior
to settling on the Island of Saint John."
The precise date of the Bakers' arrival on the Island is not known. It was
possibly during the late 1780's that the family settled at Bedeque on land
adjacent to that of another Loyalist, William Schurman...."
"John Baker was a farmer and Bedeque's first blacksmith. It is recounted that in the early dyas the French Acadian settlers of Tignish occasionally would journey more than fifty miles to have work done at John Baker's forge."
"The Bedeque Bakers corresponded with their Quaker relatives in
Pennsylvania after the Rebellion, and Loyalist John paid them an impromptu
visit when he went to Philadelphia to have a leg amputated. After several
years John, junior, brought his father home to Central Bedeuque where he
died on December 17th, 1821. At that time all of his children were married
and
established on farms nearby. Joseph inherited the homestead. John Baker
and Hannah, his wife, whose death is unrecorded, had a family of eight children,
six sons and two daughters".
