COOK, ZAY
Cook was a hired man for John Martin Broomall
1st on his farm in
Upper Chichester, Delaware Co. PA 1847-48. He slept in the bedroom over
the kitchen of the farmhouse. William Booth Broomall recounts: "A journey
to the woods by Zay Cook alone, with a team of horses and timber wheels,
to haul a log to the wood yard led to an accident, which punctuated the
usual course of affairs with excitement. By some misadventure in the woods,
he had fallen and the timber wheels passing over him, had broken both of
his legs. He lay there until night making abortive cries for assistance.
The wonderment of the horses, at the apparent abandonment of them by their
driver, was almost loud enough to be heard. His failure to return at night
led to a search and his plight was discovered. The feature of his convalescence
seemed to be a constant sitting with his legs immersed in a tub of hot water,
from which the juvenile inference necessarily flowed, that Zay like Diogenes
was destined to spend the remainder of his days in a tub."

POWELL, THOMAS
December 31, 1852 DELAWARE COUNTY REPUBLICAN
DEATH OF 'UNCLE TOM.'- Thomas Powell - better known as 'Uncle Tom'- a highly
respectable colored man, died at the residence of Judge LEIPER, in this
county, on the 11th inst., at an advanced age. Uncle Tom and his family
were manumitted by their owner, JOHN CHEW THOMAS, Esq., of Maryland, many
years ago, shortly after which he emigrated to Pennsylvania and hired with
Judge LEIPER, with whom he remained until he was removed by death. He was
a well tried, faithful domestic, and by his fidelity to every trust, he
won the entire confidence of the family, who took care of him in his declining
and helpless years. His perception of the present was obscured by age, but
his recollection of former days was good, and he
delighted to dwell on the incidents of the past. 'Fairland,' his first home,
was unrivaled, in his opinion, and it was a pleasure to him to talk of its
perfections, and of the great men who visited there, among whom he always
gave the first place to Gen WASHINGTON, whom he boasted of having seen at
his mastertable. He often spoke of being in Congress, and of the scenes
that were enacted there - meaning when he waited on Mr. THOMAS, who was
a member. His kind protectors, Mr. and Mrs. LEIPER, were absent at the time
of his death, but ample arrangements were made by the family for his funeral.
His remains were followed to the grave by a large number of persons, and
placed by the said of those of his wife, 'Aunt Peg,'in the Ridley Presbyterian
church yard. A funeral sermon, appropriate to the occasion, was preached
by Rev.
Edward M. Farris, of this Borough.
