DATABASES of AFRICAN-AMERICAN
& NON-WHITE NAMES
NOTE: As you go through these databases, be
aware that "black" does not always mean African and that "Mulatto"
was frequently used to describe people of Native American or mixed ancestry,
including swarthy Caucasian types- it did not necessarily mean half black
and half white. The term "colored" used in the 1859 Chester Directory
was a catch-all for anyone not "white." Different census enumerators
would use their own criteria. As discrimination grew in the late 18th and
19th century, more and more people were lumped into these imprecise racial
descriptions. For more information on historical racial designations, refer
to Heite Consulting.
