November 14, 1892, Sewickley PA; and died. March 28, 1979, Minneapolis Minnesota,
Marguerite Booth was the oldest child and only
daughter of John Broomall and Mame (Nevin) Booth. In an undated autobiographical
note, Marguerite says, "In order to enter Yale Medical School in September
1931, I had to do work in more sciences than I had had at Smith many years
before (1910-14). When Mother died in November 1930, I decided to go into
medicine. I went to New Haven to see the Dean. He did not think I could
do it, as it had been 16 years since I graduated. But I told him I had done
high school in three years with the highest average anyone had ever had,
and was Phi Beta Kappa at Smith. He said if I went to Cornell in Ithaca
for 2nd semester [of the1930-31 school year] to get physics and chemistry
(quantitative analysis), audited two zoology courses, [did] six weeks of
summer school covering one year's work in Organic Chemistry, and got A's
in all of them, he would admit me to Yale School of
Medicine.
"Well, I did get A's in everything, so I went to Yale. At the end of the second medical year, we all had to take Part I of the National Medical Board Exams given by all medical schools in the country. I tied for second place among 350 candidates, and I made the highest single mark in Biochemistry, 96%. I also got a 93 in Anatomy."
After her graduation from Yale, Dr. Booth interned
at Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC (1935-36); did her residency at
University Hospital, Minneapolis (1936-38); and became a fellow in Pediatrics
at the University of Minnesota (1937-40). Her thesis, entitled Hematological
changes resulting from anoxia, insulin hypoglycemia and metrazol shock,
with special reference
to fragility of erythrocytes," was published in Minneapolis in 1940
(it is available in the Bio Med library at the U of MN, Twin Cities Campus).
From 1946-55, she was Clinical Assistant Professor in Pediatrics at U.M. In 1946, she resigned from the University because of "family responsibilities." That same year, she received an award from the Guatemala Pediatric Association for her lectureship in Pediatric Hematology.
