1. JOHN BROOMALL (DANIEL3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born November 08, 1760, and died March 06, 1848 in Upper Chichester Twp, Delaware Co PA. Buried Upper Chichester Friends Cemetery. He married (1) SUSANNA WILSON January 04, 1798, daughter of THOMAS and RUTH WILSON. SUSANNA died December 1798 and was buried at Middletown December 21. He married (2) SARAH SHARPLESS June 07, 1804, daughter of JOSEPH SHARPLESS and MARY HIBBERD. SARAH died June 1806 and was buried at Middletown June 15. He married (3) SARAH MARTIN March 14, 1811, daughter of GEORGE MARTIN and ELIZABETH REYNOLDS. Sarah Martin died April 12, 1819, aged 42 and is buried at Upper Chichester Friends. John married (4) ANN TOWNSEND July 04, 1822, daughter of SAMUEL and SARAH TOWNSEND. ANN died January 5, 1836.
According to family legend, John and his father Daniel watched a skirmish
during the Battle of the Brandywine in 1777. Although not a birthright Quaker,
John requested membership in the Society of Friends June 30, 1788. John
was a farmer, and bought a farm in Upper Chichester Township, on Naaman's
Creek, which remained in the family until 1902. On this farm was an interesting
building, the Old Ark, which he tore down in
1816 and built a stone house. (From the notes of Caroline Larkin Broomall):
"His children remember him only as an old man. He endeavored to teach
them of love and kindness to all God and creatures. In disposition he was
amiable, quiet in manner and very zealous in attending meetings. He ever
showed his disapproval of the use of ardent spirits and was among the first
in the neighborhood to discontinue the use of whiskey and gin in the harvest
field."

2. GEORGE BROOMALL (JOHN4, DANIEL3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born January 03, 1814 in Upper Chichester Twp, Delaware Co. PA. He married REBECCA SHOEMAKER March 10, 1842, daughter of NATHAN SHUMACHER and MARY KENNEDY. George Broomall was a dairy farmer. He shipped butter via railroad to Philadelphia and Baltimore. He was disowned by the Friends for marriage out of unity. In 1856 he became associated with Richard Stevenson, whose dry goods store occupied the Penn Building in Chester, which had been built by John Martin Broomall 1st, George's brother.
The Broomall Department Store,
as it came to be known, later fell into the hands of George's son, John
Martin Broomall 2nd. George died April 9, 1902. Rebecca died February 22,
1888. They are both buried in Media Cemetery.

5. JOHN MARTIN BROOMALL 2nd (GEORGE5, JOHN4, DANIEL3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was
born August 04, 1848, and died November 30, 1921, aged 73. He married ELLA
HORNER LINDSAY March 17, 1880, daughter of HENRY HORNER LINDSAY and SARAH
PRICE. ELLA died April 10, 1913, aged 57. John
Martin Broomall 2nd came to Chester Borough as a young man and engaged in
business. He owned Broomall's Dry Goods Store, which was prominent in Chester
from 1856 until 1927. John sold it in 1918 when he retired. Both JOHN and
ELLA are buried in Chester Rural Cemetery, Chester PA.

JOHN1) was born April 14, 1843, and died before 1902 He was a
farmer in Chester Co.. He married SALLIE B. GOODLEY March 22, 1875.
Child of CHARLES BROOMALL and SALLIE GOODLEY is:
i. REBA BROOMALL, b. about 1877; d. July 31, 1878, aged 18 mo. Bur. Upper Chichester Friends Cemetery.
7. ELIZABETH
BROOMALL (GEORGE5, JOHN4, DANIEL3, JOHN2,
JOHN1) was born December 27, 1851. She married HENRY C. HOWARD,
son of BALDWIN HOWARD and SARAH ANN SMEDLEY, January 09, 1879 in Media PA..
HENRY was "one of the most prominent members of the Delaware County
Bar."

14. HAROLD SHOEMAKER BROOMALL (JOHN MARTIN6, GEORGE5, JOHN4, DANIEL3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born 1888. He married DORIS WAYNE ELKINS 1915 in St. Martins in the Fields Episcopal Church, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA, daughter of HARVEY LINCOLN ELKINS and MARY LEE CHAPMAN. He attended University of Pennsylvania Class of 1912 College, 1914 Medical School. In those days you needed only 2 years of college before medical school. He served in World War I as a doctor in the Field Artillery in France and Belgium. He was a student of military history from an early age. Harold died October 31, 1954 in Philadelphia. Doris Elkins attended the School of Design for Women, Broad & Masters Sts., Philadelphia, graduating on May 27, 1910, from a 4 year course in illustration. She had studio at 1430 S. Penn Square where she gave lessons in drawing & painting. She was always interested in art and history. Long after she was widowed, and her family and grandchildren were grown, she took a job working at the American Philosophical Society Library. She was a lovely person and a lot of fun to be with. They are both buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Mt. Airy Philadelphia.
