1. JOHN BROOMHALL was born in England in 1726 and moved with his mother to near Bristol about 1739, where he was allegedly tricked into boarding a ship bound for North America. He was sold as an indentured servant for seven years to a Quaker named Paynter [probably SAMUEL PAINTER of Pennsbury Twp. Chester Co. PA]. He married in 1751 and settled in Chester County PA. The name of his wife is not known. Raised in the Church of England, he continued in that faith, as did two of his children, Thomas and James. His other two sons, John and Enos, became Quakers when they married Quaker girls in Kennett Monthly Meeting. WE have found only one clue as to the name of JOHN's wife. May 13 1775, ANN BROOMHALL was witness to the will of Rachel Pierce, widow, East Marlborough. since. JOHN lived in Pennsbury, then Kennett, and then (1767) East Marlborough Townships. Since a daughter would barely have been old enough in 1775 to be a witness, most likely this ANN is the wife of JOHN.

viii. LYDIA BROOMHALL, who was married to WILLIAM KENNEY of Pennsbury on April 17. 1793 by Thomas W. Cheyney Esq. None of the other Broom(h)alls with unknown daughters are the right age to be her father. She was probably born abt. 1773.

3. JOHN BROOMHALL (JOHN 1) was born June 10, 1752 (probably in Pennsbury Twp, Chester Co, PA, )and died March 17, 1835. He married HANNAH CLOUD, daughter of JEREMIAH CLOUD and LYDIA HARLAN before 1777. The family moved from Kennett MM to New Garden MM in 1802. JOHN and HANNAH probably stayed in Pennsylvania, although several of their children went to Ohio.

9. JOHN BROOMHALL (JOHN 2, JOHN 1) was born August 03, 1777, Chester Co. PA, and died December 27, 1853 in Ohio. He married October 23, 1800 (1) PHEBE WEBB , (who died in 1826), daughter of THOMAS WEBB and ELIZABETH (BETTY) SWAYNE, PA Quakers . The family moved from Kennett MM to Bradford MM December 11, 1800. In 1817, JOHN went to Ohio from Bradford MM, while Phebe and the children went back to Kennett MM. In 1818 PHEBE and children William, Orphah, Minerva, Hannah, John and Webb followed to Belmont Co. OH. JOHN married (2) ELIZABETH SMITH. No issue.

11. JACOB BROOMHALL (JOHN 2, JOHN 1) was born May 04, 1782 in Chester Co. PA. He married ORPHAH WEBB, a sister of PHOEBE WEBB who married his brother, JOHN. JACOB was a chairmaker, and shows up in the Chester county Tax list of 1815. JACOB and ORPHAH settled in Ohio in 1816. JACOB died there July 31, 1861. ORPHAH died April 1, 1868, according to an unsubstantiated source.

Both William and Rachel are buried in Sugar Grove Cemetery #3, Clinton Co. OH.
