This property in Thornbury Township, originally 127 acres, was bought in 1767 by Daniel Broomall (1728-1817) and his wife Martha. There they raised 12 children. Tax assessments show that Daniel usually kept 4 horses, 2 cows and 4-7 sheep. After Daniel's death in 1817, the farm went to James (1765-1838) his fourth son. The three elders sons, John, Isaac and Nehemiah, had already bought farms elsewhere. James divided the property between three of his sons- Thomas Dutton, Abraham, and Daniel.
The photo on left is from the notebooks of Dr. Anna Broomall at the
Delaware County Historical Society. She writes: " Old stone house on
the Broomall farm in Thornbury Township half a mile north east of Glen Mills
Station. Photographed 3, 24, 1910. It is built upon the side of a hill,
so that there are three stories in front and one in the rear; the initials
T.D. B. [Thomas Dutton Broomall}are cut on a stone in the outer wall of
the back building. The ceiling rafters are uncovered, the fireplaces are
large and the mantels are long and narrow. There are two rooms on the main
floor, the north room into which the front door opens, has a winding stairway
leading from one corner to the second story; the ground floor of the
main building is divided into a large kitchen and a small cellar; the
crane is still in the great fireplace."
The photo at
right is of the opposite side of the same house, taken November 1999 by
Ethel Dougherty.
A plastered stone house to the East of the first house, was built in 1836 by Daniel Broomall, (1802-1887) the son of James. The map of 1873 shows the southern portion of the original farm to be sold to the Hunt family, while Abraham and Daniel occupied the northwest & northeast portions, respectively.
