Providence Meeting House
& Sandy Bank Burial Ground

Friends met for worship at the house of Thomas Minshall (left) from 1696 to 1699. The house is situated on Providence Road in what is now the borough of Media. By 1699 they had determined to build a meeting house, and Thomas Minshall donated the laand for the new meeting house, directly across Providence Road, in what is now Upper Providence Township.

A log meeting house was built in 1699 and meeeting were held there starting in 1700. John Broomall, wife Mary, and his family worshipped there from 1720-1729. The present meeting house (right) was built in 1814.

Originally the burial ground for Providence Friends was Sandy Bank, just up the road from Thomas Minshall's house. The land was donated in 1690 by Thomas Powell. The early stones are made of fieldstone and date from 1704.

Some years later, burials were made in the ground adjoining Providence Meeting House (right) probably about 1715. It is likely that John Broomall 1st and his wife Mary are buried here. John's will stated that he be buried at the Providence Friends Burial Ground, but it is not clear which one was in use at the time.
