Located on the Western edge of Media PA, Broomall's
Lake was part of a large tract owned by Judge John M. Broomall. He built
the dam in 1883 across an unnamed tributary of Ridely Creek for the purpose
of harvesting ice. The ice was stored there and sold from ice wagons in
the warmer months. Judge Broomall also built the boathouse (picture). A
country Club was started, with facilities for boating, swimming and skating
on the lake. The current owner is Broomall's Lake Country Club.

The borough of Media built Third Street across the dam. The old Clubhouse burned down in 1967, and about the same time, the lake was closed to swimming because of pollution. The club stopped winter skating on the lake because of insurance costs. Today, the dam is in need of extensive repairs. The Country Club and the Borough both maintain that they cannot afford to repair the dam, so have used $30,000 in Federal money to pay for an engineering study.
