Descendants of Thomas Broomall
aka "Honeycomb Tom" of the Tuscarora Tribe

Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS BROOMALL was born into the Tuscarora Tribe, part of the Iroquois Nation located in Northwestern PA and central NY state. It is not know exactly when he was born- family history says about 1820; but census data indicates his birth at various times between 1806 and 1818. Irene Dunlap, his GGgrandaughter writes: "...How did an Indian boy who is not from Delaware County get to live in the area and become a member of the Broomall Family? I may have a lead on how Thomas got to the area. I have been doing some research on the Broomall family and the Aston area and I have discovered that many Quaker families of the area supported a mission in Northwestern NY state. This mission was to the Seneca Indians (also part of the Iroquois Nation) to teach the Senecas the art of farming. This mission was a little settlement called Tunessassa and it was managed by Thomas Dutton from 1808 to 1813... The Quakers would send the indian boys, about age 15, with parents' approval, to live with Quaker families of Philadelphia, and these boys would return home at the age of 21. Whether or not this is the way Thomas found his way here, I cannot say, but it is a possibility. I know from my family history that Thomas and his family were subject to a great deal of prejudice living in Delaware Co at that time. As one of my Aunts states, it was looked down on the have "Indian blood" and because of the social atmosphere, my grandmother's family did not like to speak of it and some did not want any claim to their Indian heritage. I understand from my family that anyone with "Indian blood" was often treated more deplorably that the African-American citizens." Thomas did not take the Broomall name until he became a Christian August 29th 1847, which is written in the family bible. Prior to his conversion he was known as "Honeycomb Tom." Thomas was a farm worker and then was a spinner at a mill in Aston Twp. Del. Co. He is listed as "white" in all census records. THOMAS married ELLEN JANE CARSON on March 18, 1848. ELLEN died in a house fire on January 8, 1909. THOMAS died after 1880- he is on that census. The family attended the Chelsea Chapel- Ebenezer Church. They were both buried at Chelsea Cemetery and moved to Siloam cemetery October 1930. Apparently the church was founded in 1847 by Dr. Phineas Price, who married Thomas and Ellen. The land, located on Concord Road, Aston, was sold after Dr. Price's death in 1867. The church and cemetery were sold separately and may have been purchased in 1868 by Siloam ME church. In 1922 the church was closed and in 1930 the bodies from the chelsea cemetery were moved by RP Cloud Undertakers. These bodies were buried at Siloam in the old part of the cemetery next to the back fence in a section marked Bodies from Chelsea. The bodies removed to Siloam were: John Dean Jr., John Dean, Rebecca Burch, Mae Quigley, William Henry Broomall, Minnie Broomall, Thomas Broomall, Robert Broomall, Ellen Jane Broomall, Hannah Cook, Griffith(child), Joshua Battey, John Hughes, Ann Hughes, Penrose Miller(child), Liza Martin & Truitt(child). I have gone to Siloam and I cannot locate any of the above souls. I know from the file on Ebenzer, that the cemetery at Chelesea had headstones. No marks exist at Siloam. I have tried to contact Siloam for records and have not received a response. But, I will continue the research on my Broomalls'.

Since WILLIAM is the only son, we presume he is SAMUEL's parent; however he might be the offspring of one of the daughters. Irene Dunlap writes: "Thomas's grandson/greatgrandson I am not sure. My family believes he was raised by Ellen Congleton but his birth mother may be another daughter or Lilly
Williams. He is the boy in the newspaper article who was in the house when Ellen Broomall died. Sam joined the Navy as an adult and was killed during WWII in the Pacific; he went down with the ship. I have a copy of the 1910 census which states he is a border of the William
Graham Family living in Chester Hgts. Village, Aston Township."
