Dan Ingalls raises Black Angus Cattle, horses, and Catahoula Leopard
cow dogs. He owns the grandparents of my dog Leroy, so when we were planning
the Wyoming vacation, I emailed him and asked if we could visit. He invited
us to come up to his camp in the Wind River Range where he pastures his
cattle all summer at 10,000 feet. Here is Dan standing on top of Bacon Peak.
Dan has six sons who help him with the cattle. They live up here all
summer long with about 16 dogs. They must guard the cattle from predation
by grizzley bears. Here are three of Dan's sons, Samuel, Spencer & Jasper
with a few of their dogs. They have just finished delivering salt via pack
horse to the cattle. I had hoped to see the Catahoulas work, but by the
time we arrived it was after noon, and the dogs just lay around. They had
been hard at work since dawn!
Here is a group of Dan's cows. He has one of the oldest herds of Black
Angus in the USA, started by his great, great grandfather. They are longer
and beefier than lots of other Angus we have seen. For more information,
you can check out Dan's
website.
